This paper deals with the theme project handbook and wants to determine to which extend the project handbook generates benefits for projects, project management and the company. The opinions on the project handbook differ very much. On the one hand, the project handbook is criticized and described as an annoying and useless tool. On the other hand, the project handbook is seen as a necessary factor for the success of a project. This paper compares these different opinions with the experience of experts and determines which benefits results with the use of a project handbook, what alternatives are used in practice and which contents of a project handbook are beneficial for the people involved in projects. These questions were answered by an empirical survey and afterwards compared with the theory. From the results of the interviews it can be said that the experts use a project handbook and verify this tool as useful. A majority of the people interviewed developed a project handbook by themselves. Here, however, no alternative can be called generally valid. These versions differ too much.
